Rep / Competitve Team Try-Outs (Begin Early March)

Parkland Minor Ball is fully committed to offering competive high level Softball. Team rosters are formed following tryouts that determine the players demonstrated ability at the tryout sessions.  Each athlete will get at least two hours in a small group to demonstrate their abilities to the coaches. Try-outs wil be held in early March for the U11, U13, and U15 Rep teams. ID Camps will be help in September for next seasons teams.

Rec Evaluations (Begin late March)

Rec Teams will be evenly split by skill level. Evaluations for Rec Teams will begin in late March for all levels.

Season - Rep / Competitive Teams

The season typically runs from April to mid July. Teams may decide to play in the Girls Prairie League Softball (GPLS) with league play on weekends or GEMSA with weekday games. Teams may decide to participate in Provincials in July.

Up to 3 Additional practices and batting cages may be scheduled per week.

Teams may participate in additional tournaments and potentially 1 out of province tournament.

Season - Recreational Teams

The season typically runs from April to the end of June with league play starting the first week of May thru the last week of June. Teams may decide to participate in Provincials in July or August. Softball teams will play in the Greater Edmonton Minor Softball Association (GEMSA), league games will be played on weeknights with 6:30 pm start times. Games are played locally and in the surrounding communities.

Game nights vary by age group:

U9 - Monday/Wednesday (One game and one practice per week)

U11 - Tuesday/Thursday

U13 - Monday/Wednesday

U15 - Tuesday/Thursday

U17 - Monday/Wednesday

U19 - TBD

Teams may decide to participate in additional tournaments on weekends.

Additional practices and batting cages may be scheduled on weekends.

Travel

Softball players can expect to travel in the Tri Area, Edmonton, Leduc, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, St. Albert, and surrounding area. GEMSA schedules the league games and does their best to reduce travel when possible. Teams may participate in a variety of tournaments both locally and around the province.

Cost

The costs of registration cover expenses such as insurance, equipment, use of jerseys, umpires and diamond rentals. Teams are required to cover their own travel, apparel, and tournament costs.  In the case of non parent paid coaches, the team will be responsible to cover 75-100% of the coaches honorarium. A proposed budget will be presented for parent’s approval at the beginning of the season, after the team is selected.  This gives parents the opportunity to see the cost of participating on the team and in the Softball Program. The cost is often offset by team fundraising activities. The amount of fundraising required varies by team and depends on travel and tournament activity. Parents will be expected to contribute “seed money” to get the team budget a kickstart.
