EXECUTIVE REPORTS 2023-2024

PRESIDENT - BEV KLEBANOSKY

As we close the 2024 baseball season, it's a fitting time to reflect on the achievements, challenges, and progress made within our organization. Baseball remains a beloved sport in our province, and this year, we’ve witnessed tremendous growth both on and off the field. The collective efforts of our players, coaches, staff, and fans have propelled the sport to new heights, and as President, I’m proud to present this report summarizing our key accomplishments, challenges, and plans for the future.

Parkland Minor Ball continued to see growth in registration in our Baseball programs in 2024. It’s safe to say that the future is looking great for PMBA athletes. With our continued growth, we took the opportunity to bring on a full-time General Manager to help support the administration of our Association. This has been a tremendous help in allowing us to provide support to our volunteers, coaches, athletes and families.  The focus of the off-season is to review and develop our policies and procedures as well as conduct reviews of our programs and identify areas for growth and development.

One of the biggest changes implemented this year was the addition of mandatory volunteer requirements for the athlete’s families.  A review was done comparing Parkland Minor Ball to other minor support associations (baseball and other sports) regarding volunteer requirements. PMBA settled on a volunteer requirement that placed us in line with what is expected in other sports in the Parkland area and other Baseball Associations in Alberta.  The proceeds from the volunteering is what allowed us to bring on our General Manager as well as support other areas in our organization. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we worked through our first season with this. We are making changes to the information and making sure it is readily accessible for families to help answer any questions you may have.

2024 was very successful in our Recreation and Rep programs. There were numerous teams that achieved medals in tournament, league, and Provincial play. Our 18U AAA Blue and 13U A Red  teams were Provincial Champions. We successfully hosted numerous tournaments and Provincial Championships. We had the tremendous opportunity to host the 14U Girls Western Canada Baseball Championship in August and received much praise over the quality of the tournament and facilities. Thank you to all that helped out for the time and effort and displaying Parkland Minor Ball in such a positive way throughout it all!

Parkland Minor Ball Academy continues to show growth and success. We were able to host our third annual Academy vs Alumni Fundraiser Game in September. It is always fun to watch our alumni and coaches suit up to play against our current athletes.

Building on last year, Parkland Minor Ball Academy continues to offer after-school training. We were able to build on the success of these programs last year and are optimistic for continued growth in our off-season programs.

Baseball Alberta has had some changes in the office staff this year, with the addition of  a new Programs Coordinator. They are looking at adding an additional staff member to support programs and marketing.  We are very thankful for the support we have received from Baseball Alberta in 2024.

Our focus for 2025 continues to be the development of our athletes, coaches, and umpires. Diamond improvements were started towards the end of the season at Henry Singer Ball Park and we expect to see continued improvements in our facilities for next season as well.

I am deeply grateful for the continued dedication of our players, staff, fans, and partners. Together, we are building a brighter future for the sport we all love.

As we look ahead to 2025, we remain committed to the values that make baseball great: teamwork, integrity, and a passion for the game. Thank you for your unwavering support. Here's to another great year of baseball!

SECRETARY - JOLENE LYLE

As secretary I focused central storage of current PMBA documents on the Google drive.  I maintained all board documents and scheduled  monthly board meetings including recording  and distribution monthly minutes for review.  Special thanks to the GM for helping troubleshoot and getting the new board all set up with access to their google accounts.

REGISTRAR - LARYSA ESSLEMONT

Registration went well this season. Third year of using TeamSnap for registration and team rosters. The ability to add in more information electronically for ease of registration was a great feature to have.

This is the summary of registered players over the last season.

2024 Registrations:

JR REP DIRECTOR - DARREN BADRY

PMBA would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that helped make the 2024 rep baseball season a great success.  The commitment of our coaches, managers, executive members, parents and players provided our athletes the opportunity to develop, grow and continue to love the game.  The season at the 11U and 13U age groups went fairly smoothly with no major issues to address.  Expectations from families continue to rise which raises the importance for good communication and outlining clear expectations by the board and coaching staffs. The pre-season manager’s meeting continued to be extremely well attended and the inclusion of the OFM Manual by Baseball Alberta helped to facilitate consistent messaging and expectations and provided an opportunity for managers and treasurers to network and meet one another.  Operating with a GM for the first time helped add capacity to the evaluation and rostering processes and should help build consistency in messaging and process moving forward.

Registration:

A huge thank you to our GM - Amy Procter and  Registrar - Laryssa Esslemont for taking care of the registration process again this season and supporting/educating and updating the Directors constantly throughout the evaluation and team formation process.  With changes at BA it is likely that discussions will be ongoing with the board to determine if there is a superior and more efficient program to use for registration.

Rep Program Evaluations:

A huge thank you to all the volunteers (both on and off the field) who were involved in the eval process.  The process was facilitated once again by Chris James and supported by the board members, coaches and parent volunteers.  At this time we don’t believe that there is a more efficient and effective process for us to investigate. Finding a group size that is most effective in evaluating would help to streamline the process and provide the best opportunity to ensure placements are as accurate as possible.  There may be value in utilizing the TeamSnap app to a greater extent when tracking, moving and communicating with athletes and families during the evaluation process.  It may also be worthwhile to investigate the use of an evaluation app to create efficiency and reliability in tracking athletes.  This would require some market evaluation and demos to find out if it would be beneficial.

Evaluations began on March 3 and ran until March 16 at the TLC.

Plans are underway for the 2025 eval sessions. The intent is to have most teams formed prior to Spring Break (2025 Spring Break begins Mar 28-Apr 7 for PSD/Evergreen).  There may be value in considering moving evals to February in order to avoid hockey playoffs and Spring Break conflicts.

Our PMBA Scheduler (Lee Scantlebury) has been working  with the TLC to secure space for the 2025 eval process.

Twins Rep Team Formation:

Another successful season of growth and development by our athletes. Thank you to all of our coaches and managers for taking on the responsibility of helping our athletes develop a passion for the game! There were no Provincial Champions in the junior levels this season but we hope to return next year with a couple championships.   There needs to be some discussion around tournament selection for teams as the Kamloops Allstar Classic has dropped in value for dollar as the organizational group planning the tournament has changed in recent years. This year saw the addition of a 3rd 13UAA team and stacking of diamonds to allow for enough practice capacity during the week.

Darin McDonald Memorial Tournament (DMM)

The DMM Tournament ran for the 8th season.  The tournament was fully subscribed at all levels. The online registration process will need to continue to evolve and require payment to ensure attendance.

Having 2 x AA teams at the 15U and 18U age groups this season eased the logistical challenges in maintaining and providing volunteers at the second diamonds. If we need to revert to single teams at these age groups the organizers will need to be creative in servicing the additional diamonds without host teams.

The board received additional assistance provided by Chad Boyko as a tournament volunteer which helped  absorb some of the workload from the rep directors who were just coming off the busy eval and team formation periods for the association.

The tournament continues to be offered at a break even price point and provides great value for attending teams when compared to other tournaments hosted in the province.   There was a small $50 increase per entry this season which is still much more affordable than similar tournaments being offered.  The older teams have a difficult time providing enough pitching for a possible 5 game weekend.  We may want to look at the format for the older ages.

If any coaches or managers have any suggestions on the DMI or any other components of the Junior Rep program please forward suggestions to juniorrep@pmba.email or dtbadry@telus.net

SR REP DIRECTOR - ALLAN LYSTER

This was my second year volunteering as a Rep Director for PMBA and I have really enjoyed getting to know many of the families within PMBA that put in an incredible amount of time and effort to help make the rep baseball season successful each year! I’d like to thank all of the other board members for putting in all of the work that is required to make PMBA the association that it has grown into and all of the OFM’s who were a pleasure to work with throughout the 2024 season. This was the first year that PMBA had a General Manager and this really helped with ensuring a smooth 2024 season, big shout out to Amy Procter who did a great job! I’d also like to thank all of the amazing coaches that we have within PMBA for dedicating a huge amount of their summer months to the development of our athletes both on and off the field. At the 15U level there was one AAA team and three AA teams, at the 18U level we had the BAEL team, the AAA team and two AA teams. With eight teams between the 15U and 18U ages groups diamond space was a challenge with most teams stacking practices. The coaches and OFM’s did a great job working around the diamond availability and making accommodations when required. The season at the 15U and 18U age groups went very smoothly with no major issues to address.

Registration:

A massive thank you to Larysa Esslemont who was the PMBA Registrar for the 2024 season. This is a very time consuming position within PMBA and Larysa did a fantastic job ensuring that all players were able to register and that all of the lists were up to date.

Rep Program Evaluations:

Thank you to all of the volunteers who were involved in the eval process.  The evaluations were run by Chris James with the support of PMBA coaches. Thank you all for putting in a massive amount of time during the evaluations to make sure the players are evaluated properly and placed on the appropriate teams. The turnout for the 15U and 18U evaluations was very strong with many athletes competing to make the PMBA rep teams in 2024 and being able to field eight Rep teams for the 2024 season.

Twins Rep Team Formation:

Thank you to all of the coaches and OFM’s who dedicated hundreds of hours to ensure that our players had a successful season of development and continued to grow their love of the game. A huge congrats to 18UAAA Blue team for their Provincial Championship!  This is an amazing accomplishment and all of the players, coaches and everyone involved in helping to get these athletes to that championship should be very proud!

Darin McDonald Memorial Tournament (DMM)

The DMM Tournament ran for the 8th season and was a great weekend, we also lucked out with fantastic weather. The tournament was full at every level with many teams wanting to attend and teams have already reached out for the 2025 tournament. A huge thank you to Chad Boyko for his help during the weekend all of the PMBA teams that hosted diamonds for the weekend, without everyone stepping up to ensure diamonds are ready and having volunteers to work the games the weekend wouldn’t be possible. I had a lot of positive feedback from teams attending the tournament, well done!

If any coaches or managers have any suggestions on the DMI or any other components of the Senior Rep program please forward suggestions to seniorrrepdirector@pmba.com.

Looking forward to the 2025 season!

RECREATION DIRECTOR - MICHAEL COENE

As we wrap up the 2024 season, Parkland Minor Baseball Association reflects on an incredible year filled with growth, community spirit, and memories that will last a lifetime. This season saw an increase in numbers of athletes joining the league, an increase in volunteer support, and the continued success of our core mission: providing a positive, fun, and inclusive environment for all who love the game of baseball. This year, we saw over 378 athletes across thirty teams, in addition to 220 athletes in our Rally Cap program. We experienced excellent numbers in both player registration and family attendance at games. It is great to see baseball striving in our community!

Our season began with evaluations taking place March 17th for 15U and 18U and April 6th and 7th for 9U, 11U, and 13U which ran quickly and efficiently with many parents volunteering with evaluations on field. In combination with dry weather and town maintenance, we were able to get on the diamonds a week early to allow additional practice times before our scheduled days of play which was nice. Luckily, the smoke, and air quality were not as much of an issue this year as last. With minimal weather cancellations it allowed for a full and successful season. In addition to a competitive season, we also hosted our year end tournament for our 9U, 11U, and 13U levels on June 21st, 22nd, and 23rd . The tournament not only showcased our league’s talent but also lots of smiles and fun combined with great weather. A lunch was provided for athletes and coaches on Saturday as well. It was great to see our diamonds packed with athletes, friends and families showing their support! Congratulations to all participants for an excellent 2024 baseball season!

This year we saw the introduction of mandatory volunteer credits, there were some growing pains with volunteers and credits available as well as registering for bingos commitments. 2025 will see improvements and more defined volunteer requirements. Our relationship and commitment to the Spruce Grove Bingo Hall is important to our association and has proved successful. Special thank you to our bingo coordinator Michelle Hembling for managing this transition and the challenges faced!

This season, we had the privilege of watching many talented young athletes grow both on and off the field. Special recognition goes to our Gavin Baron Memorial Award recipient Emma Acevedo, who showed outstanding sportsmanship, team dedication and leadership. Additional recognition to our junior coaches of the year Brad Parker and Scott Knibbs as well as our Senior coach of the year Mike Dumont, who went beyond in mentoring our players. We also want to acknowledge the dedication of all our volunteer coaches and parents who make our league possible. Their time, energy, and commitment are at the heart of our success.

As we look toward the 2025 season, we are excited about new possibilities and continuing to build a keen sense of community through baseball. We are actively seeking more volunteers to join our league, particularly in coaching and level coordinators. If you are interested in getting involved, please do not hesitate to reach out!

I want to recognize our recreation level coordinators that helped ensure a successful recreation season: 9U - Blaine Bretzlaff, 11U - Adam Colameco, 13U - Booker Alston, 15U/18U Roxanne Mullett.  Finally, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to every athlete, coach, volunteer, and family member who made this season a success. Your passion, dedication, and support are what make Parkland Minor Baseball Association a special place for kids and families alike. We could not have done it without you!
